Quiet Thursday

Wow!  I have one follower, Mr. Baeksaeju from the Here and There blog.  I have truely enjoyed reading his blog.  Anyone that enjoys the flavours of Korean local liquors and plays World of Warcraft must be a stand up guy in my books.

Last night I had my class at the local dong office: The San boo 2 dong office to be precise.  I teach elementary school children that don't have access to a foreign teacher at their school.  They are usually a refreshing change from my middle school students.  There is one student, let's call him the little shit disturber (LSD), that is a source of constant argravation for me.  He yells.  He screams.  He runs around.  He curses in Korean.  He curses in English.  In the past, I have tried my best to ignore most of his behaviour as it always seemed that his outbursts were merely attention stealing ploys.  As it is so close to my holidays (2 working days left), I am really feeling burnt out.  I had no patience for him last night.  He yelled.  I yelled louder.

Yelling at students is not really my style as I have always found it to be a poor method of discipline.  I feel bad that I lost my cool.  I did sentence him to clean the class room last night, and after that was finished I told him that he could not leave until after I had a talk with him.  As soon as he heard that, he bolted for the door.  I again yelled at him to sit.  He headed out of the building, past the secretary who could be heard to remark go go go.  The lack of support with discipline made me so upset, that all I could do was to start imbibing the moment I reached home.

On a positive note, my significant other gave me my Christmas present last night.  Yes, I know it is too early; but she was just too excited and could not wait.  She gave me a HD Sanyo video camera.  I was very pleased.  I had talked about buying a camera to record our experiences together for well over a year now...I just never thought that the price tag was reasonable.  What a joy it is to have a good woman.  It will be nice to record our trip to Shanghai next weekend.

Today at school we have been making Christmas cards.  Almost all of the student's Christmas cards say "Marry Christmas".  I don't have the motivation to correct them.  This afternoon I do not have any classes as my co teachers are attending some kind of workshop.  Good for them.  I have 3 hours to run out the clock and then back to testing out that new camera.  Perhaps I will post some inagural videos later.

Cheers,
I can almost taste the holidays,
Adam

  2. Thanks for the mention in your blog. Too kind, too kind! I will be staying at the Hyatt. Any must see destinations that you can recommend?

  3. I was in Shanghai for Christmas a few years ago. Had a good time.

I enjoyed the Bund area, took a river cruise. Strangest boat I have EVER seen was there. It was a huge billboard size TV screen (double sided) on a barge. Of course it was showing commercials.

  4. 1-Yeah, the Bund (Wai Tan in chinese) is a cool place for a late night romantic walk. You can cross to the other side by taking the little boat, it’ll bring you to Lujiazui (the business area).
2-Yu Yuan (Yu's garden) it's the old city of Shanghai. It’s quite pretty and typical. Just wander the narrow streets with the lady, it’s a cool place.
3-There's a dumpling joint at the corner of Nanjing Dong Lu and Zhejiang Zhong lu (pronounce juh-jiang jong loo). They serve Shanghai's specialty, the "Xia Long Bao". You can’t miss it, the restaurant is located in the 1st floor building which is a huge shiny coca-cola bottle. This is an absolute must fucking do. I miss that stuff. It’ll cost you pennies and tourists don’t go there. If you don’t do it, I’ll be most upset at you.
4-“Le Bar Rouge”, if you feel like having a nice cocktail with the lady, is definitely the place to go. They have a terrasse which is much amazing. The address is “Bund 18”. It’s right on the Bund, in the same building than Zegna and all. I like their cocktail named “AK-47”, I’m sure you’d love it.
5-If you feel like going to a nightclub, go to the G+ club. The manager is called Albert. He’s a bald asian dude, looking like a Triad member, with a moustache and a goaty. But don’t get fooled, he’s Hong-kongnese - French. The guy is cool. Address is 5F,6Block South, Xintiandi. If you’re not the nightclub kind of guy, Xintiandi is a very pretty area which deserves to be wandered, it’s very provence like. It used to be a foreign concession back in the shanghai concessions old days. They’ve got a fucking amazing burger at Blue Frog’s. (Don’t remember if it’s the correct name, though).
6-Also try the Spicy chicken hamburger at Mac Donald’s. I’m not speaking about the fried one, but about the other one. It’s very… different, yet yummy.
7-Go to a fake market. Be advised, they’ll try to trick your white ass and sell you goods at 50 times their values. Even though you’ll feel like you won the deal, they’ll have had screwed you. Take your time, sit down and break their balls to get 20 times cheaper than the cheapest. My favorite is Hongqiao’s one. It’s at the corner of Hongmei lu and. It’s quite far from the center, but I love the area. It’s where I used to live.
8-Never EVER speak with the guys and girls bugging you, proposing you fake products and sometimes dope in the main streets of shanghai. Avoid them at all cost. There are fake markets for that, which are must safer places.
9-If you cross to the other side of the Bund through the boat, go to the Jinmao tower. There’s a restaurant/café on the last floor called “Cloud 9”. The view is fucking amazing and the atmosphere cool. The price of a coffee or a tea is like 10.000won, so be warned. You might have to wait for a bit, too. It’s the same building than the Grand Hyatt hotel.
10-The pearl tower is a must see, though it’s not much interesting.
11-If you go to Hongqiao market in hongmei lu, go to the corner with Hongzhong Lu and Huaguang lu. There is a ramyeon joint front of the Family Mart. I think the façade is blue-ish. The staff wears a white muslim hat, and stuffs and menus are written in both Chinese and Arabic inside. The owner is called Muhammad, he is from Qinghai, a muslim region of China, and he serves the best damn lamb ramyeon in the whole world. It will cost you pennies. Again, it’s a joint, I’m the only white butt they’ve ever seen as a customer. They’ll make the ramyeon fresh from the dough front of your eyes. They don’t serve drinks, so you need to cross the street to buy yourself snome Snowbeer at family mart. They won’t mind you drinking it with your meal. Next to the family mart, there’s a bunch of illegal scooter taxis. Ask for “Wu Wen” and tell him “Kai Wen Shuo Ni Hao ! Ta Shen Zai Zai Han Guo.”. He’s a very good friend of mine. He’ll probably be stunned. I use to live in the bunch of buildings right there.
12-Follow every single of this recommendations for a real Shanghai experience.

    Cheers !
